The team from Imperial Paddock Pools built our first pool in the summer of 1951. It was a long hot summer with no rain and we didn't know as much back then as we do today. It sure was hard work, but we were a determined group of guys.
In the following summers, we built numerous pools, learning more and more with each new project. One such pool was quite interesting. We built a pool in West Vancouver on a steep hillside where the pool essentially hung in mid-air. If you stood on the backside of the deck and looked over the fence, you peered straight down at the neighbour's house. It was quite an ominous feeling.
Some of the well-known pools we constructed over the years included the Empire Games Pool at UBC, which we built in 1953 for the 1954 games. We also built the original pool at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club in 1955 as well as pools for some of Vancouver's most famous hotels and condominiums.
After working on the building of pools for several years, the company sent me to Los Angeles, California in 1956. I attended a six week training course where I learned all about repairs and maintenance of pools. Upon my return, I was asked to head up our pool maintenance department. I accepted that challenge with much esteem. They even provided me with a beautiful 1955 Pontiac Wagon which I used to carry pool supplies and replacement parts.
The company continued construction for several more years including the 25m indoor pool at the Arbutus Club in 1985. The Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club asked us to upgrade their facilities to include an outdoor spa. Interestingly, that spa alone cost twice as much to build than it did their entire swimming pool 25 years earlier.
We eventually stopped construction of new pools in 1985 to concentrate on pool maintenance, repair services and retail sales. It's funny, sometimes people ask, if you're not building pools anymore, what is it that you do? Our response? "Everything else."
After 1985, we continued leading the pool care sector in that we were the first to introduce salt chlorinators, eco-friendly products and other new technologies to pool owners in the Lower Mainland.
Plenty has changed over the past 60 years. What hasn't changed over the decades is our business philosophy of honest and fair prices, competent repair services and going the extra mile for our customers. We're proud of the fact that we still have a loyal group of clients that have been with us for 30, 40 and 50 years! We are grateful and we credit them for the measure of success that we have achieved.
